newbie drummer: “rods? the HELL are those?”

I remember discovering that that the humble drumstick came in a bewildering variety of brands, shapes, lengths, weights, materials, tips… you name it. But I mostly still had 3 buckets for any such hitting instruments: there were, very basically, mallets, sticks and brushes.

So imagine my quizzical looks when I was introduced to a pair of Pro-mark Cool Rods. They didn’t look right. They looked like a stick had mated with a brush and birthed twins. Or, more plausibly, someone had just duck-taped a bundle of incense sticks. It wasn’t even immediately clear which end was the ‘hitting’ end, till you thought about it.. “They’re just like sticks,” I was being re-assured. Uhm. OK. Those who knew best had decided that I should have a pair, and they weren’t pricey, so I thought why not give it a go. Continue reading

Hello to Blue :)

Just a super quick cellphone pic of Blue, my brand new second hand baby:

She is loud, and has been severely muffled after a trip to the store to buy lots of felt. The felt works quite well – pretty pleased with meself. Still: the proof of the pudding will come this weekend, when she is let off the leash during the weekend. Will see if the neighbours revolt… I’ve heard sounds of other instruments wafting through the building on occasion, so I’m hopeful.

edit: so apparently the kick drum’s feet were on backwards. loool… sigh. fixed! :o)

“Chan pa he chan ho!”

I was just musing over how incredibly annoying ads are these days… and then Heineken’s ‘The Date’ concept burst onto the scene. (Well, OK… ‘my awareness’. It’s been on ‘the scene’ for a good while already).

It’s AWESOME.

It takes some kind of bollywood-meets-bond, meets circus, meets date-movie memeplex and manages to create something immersive and engaging from it all. The joins between the borrowed ideas are seamless, and the cross-cultural slant is just a breath of fresh air. The two characters at the center of the action move the world’s tiniest story forward, from one moment to the next, and the miniature plot unfolds within the tight temporal constraints yet nothing feels squeezed at all (in fact, the shorter edits of the ad work even better). So we accept this gorgeous epic, compactified as it is in every possible dimension and yet remaining as engaging as any well-made marathon flick… Continue reading

Meet the Pike Piper

Somewhere in Pike Place Market, in downtown Seattle, there is a lady who sells handmade ceramic ocarinas. She’s The Pike Piper, and apparently it’s some close friends of hers who make the actual things, and she (the musician) sells them in the market by trilling melodiously at passer-bys that look vaguely interested in her wares.

I bought a teensy one… debating wearing it around my neck and using it as one of these warning devices women are supposed to carry about with them. It has gone into my treasure trove of musical finds from random places. Though, I oughta learn the proper fingering.

Bōkaroido!

Check this out…
So apparently the Japanese have invented some kind of singing synthesizer. You have to program it, but then most digital music-makers have precisely that kind of patience, as evidenced here:

(I’m) Lovin’ You Madly by kotaro

Pretty good, no? The synthesizer is called ‘Vocaloid‘. I guess it’s great for when you can’t afford to hire a singer, or… you know, if you fall out with the one you’ve already got. Or something…

And so ends my first post on audio-related, soundcloudy finds. Hope to post more.

Ladies of Hip-Hop…

So over at Anattitude magazine, they’ve covered an exhibition of (the history of) women in hip-hop, and I was curious about the lady with the fro’ hovering near the “1978″ label.

Youtube being the bottomless vault of awesomeness that it is, I have managed to track her down. You have to hear Tanya “sweet tee” Winley… (audio after the jump)… Continue reading
