here’s a piece of art based on a recent doodle:

Nuit Blanche 2010 – pictures
In spite of staying out all night (yes! I lasted till 6am! Were my feet sore? Yes they bloody well were)… I still did not manage to see anywhere near the number of things I’d wanted to see. So suffice it to say that my strategy is still lacking. I also regret not taking gloves… got a bit nippy as the night wore on. Photo’s after the jump. Continue reading
My ‘semi-wildstyle’ graffiti experiment
I did that this morning. I just lay in bed and doodled, grateful for an extra day off of work (woot!).
In a single stretch of concerted effort I managed to get past some really crappy attempts… it was weird… you can see from the storyboard of my attempts (after the jump) that there is a rather abrupt discontinuity, in terms of quality of execution, from the sketch just prior to the one above. And I think it is mainly because:
1) I had labelled it ‘final sketch’ – this was it, I was gonna have to get up and go shower after this, so in my mind it was the LAST attempt, and so I was concentrating harder.
2) I started out making it bigger from the get go (using a bit more space on the paper) and making the letters larger. This allowed room for experimenting. Tiny doesn’t seem to go well with graffiti (no wonder they work on walls, lol!)
3) Writing the text as simply as possible, in capitals, before layering on detail, makes a BIG difference. Biggest lever for improvement, I think.
Anyhoo. You can see how I got to the final result after a series of false starts: click after the jump… Continue reading
Spring coat
It’s been dithering between winter and spring.
Rainy and then sunny and then cold and then rainy and then sunny and then…

gothlet
I think I was thinking of this dress I almost bought, on queen street, years ago. I’d walked into this shop catering mostly to goths… they had the most fascinating outfits. There was only one little dress I had the guts to try on… It fit great, and I remember thinking OMG goth stores carry my size!! Haha…
I resisted the temptation.
I can’t even remember what it looked like anymore, other than it was dark and strappy.
Nothing else to say, really…
polymath on a burned dvd
my spring/fall look (if only)
Thanks to krishna sujatmiko‘s blog I came across the polyvore app for the first time today (yes, I *do* live under a stone). What a time hog! It’s simply irresistible to tinker with all those clothes and accessories. So this this a ‘spring/fall’ look that I created… erm… because it’s a weird hybrid between spring and fall.
And more importantly, it’s a good day and night transitioner too (toss the big woollen hoodie and lose the tote plus long boots, and slip into those heels instead… then grab your wee little clutch, throw on the necklace):

“Cantik, lah!” as they might say over in indonesia. Or maybe not… my fragments of Malay have eroded to almost nothing.
What Polyvore needs to work on:
1) consistent tracing (some items are traced well, some are really sloppy)
2) image processing. If you want to join the big boys and girls of virtual / DIY fashion etc (eg a-la Converse, for example) then you really need to hire some people who understand the arithmetic behind pixel-pushing. Or at least ppl who know when to bail out and find the relevant 3rd party libraries. Play with this tool some, and you’ll know what I mean. God.. even a simple blur round the jagged edges would have helped.
3) branding / positioning… I can’t believe they missed the opportunity to tell you which designer or design house the item is from. Which makes me think the fashion houses were not in on this venture… at least not initially. It *does* show this info when you first select the item but not after it’s in the main editing area and you click on it later to adjust it.
All in all, lotsa fun! Love the site… Now I just gotta win the lottery so I can go shopping…
Making converse…
Well, that’s one way to while away a few minutes. Goto converse.com and make a shoe! Here are some Purcells I made – named it ‘Rockergella’ (ergo stitched into the side of the shoe).
I’d have liked more color and fabric choices… but hey! It’s a pretty neat tool.
Would’ve cost 65 bucks (USA only). So if someone out there is feeling charitable, and wants to build this shoe and send it my way… erm, I’m a size 6 (that be canada sizes).
I just LURVE a business that understands it’s own brand (rarer than you’d think).

Sunflower
Okay…
So at work one day, we found a dead bee (or is it a wasp? I don’t know my insects)… we found this
adorable but dead little creature in a box of Arm and Hammer baking soda or something… which had been placed in the fridge in some kind of feeble attempt at scenting/de-scenting/sanitising/desiccating the space most in danger of re-inventing biology from the ground up, from putrefying forgotten food.
But all that packet of baking soda caught was this dead bee-thing (how the hell did it even get IN there!). Anyhow. I can tell you that this discovery made my day. Instead of getting on with work, I tried taking pictures with cellphones but it was too fuzzy. So I had to take it home, in a carefully folded bit of tissue. I can also tell you that ppl thought I was some kind of nutty necrophilic headcase.
But it was like the cutest bee ever! I took tons of macros when I got home. I hope it had a sunny life. I decided it to make it the ‘sun’, in this piece called “Sunflower”. It is is a superimposition made with the photos of those ice formations.
I wished it well and let it fall to the earth near our porch, into Mother Nature’s kind and cruel arms.

Our window this christmas
Ok… I have a bit of a thing for windows… especially when you get that stark light versus dark thing going on… I dunno why. I don’t even wanna *know* what it all means… but needless to say I took more pics from our living room window when it was glare-bright outside (on account of all the snow).
And it was dark inside, camera flash off. This is what I cropped and tweaked and teased out of the photo. Like it? I quite like it…
